"The Industrial Internet: Harnessing the Power of Brilliant Machines"

Abstract
The Industrial Internet is GE's initiative at converging big iron with big data to create brilliant machines. This technology is changing the way we work and has the potential to impact almost half of the world economy and eliminate $150 billion dollars of wasted resources. In this talk, I will present an overview of the industrial internet vision and how it is being developed at GE. The ultimate goal is to connect the world's machines with advanced sensors and software and to combine this with the power of data analytics, diagnostics, prognostics and automation, which will then enable people to make intelligent decisions better and faster, thereby reducing wastage and increasing productivity. I will also talk about the GE Global Research center in San Ramon, which is the nerve center of GE's industrial internet initiative, and describe the work that is being done here.
Biography
James Jobin is a mobile solutions researcher at GE Global Research, San Ramon. His areas of interests are wireless technology, sensor networks, embedded systems, IoT/M2M technology, GE’s Industrial Internet and data analytics. Within GE, he gets to work on technology problems in a variety of domains such as energy, transportation, oil and gas, healthcare, and more, and has experience in addressing problems from both technology and business perspectives. Before GE, he worked at a couple of start-up companies in the San Francisco Bay Area — Packet Design, Inc. (network route analytics) and Dust Networks, Inc. (wireless sensor networks), where he gained experience in research and development, software development and customer (internal and external) facing roles.
Jobin (he prefers to go by that) obtained his Ph.D. in computer science in the area of wireless networks from the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Riverside, in 2003, where his research focused on the systematization of the modeling and simulation of wireless networks. He is a member of the IEEE, ACM, IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Education Society. He enjoys building his own desktop computers and experimenting with open-source technology such as Arduino. His preferred method of commuting to work is a pair of running shoes, and in his spare time, likes to hike, backpack and photograph the great outdoors.
